Shichimi Togarashi - Japanese Seven Spice
This popular blend of seven Japanese spices back to the 17th century and has been used since as a favourite way to add flavour and heat to everything from noodles and rice dishes to grilled meats, smoked fish as well as soups and tempuras. A mix of ethically sourced orange peel, sesame seeds, garlic, Szechuan peppercorns, black peppercorns, nori (roasted seaweed) and ginger.
There are many variations of this traditional Japanese Seven Spice, but traditionally is always has bright citrus orange, warm sesame seed and medium to high levels of heat. A properly balanced Togarashi will bring out the clean, simple flavours of Japanese cuisine. Our version has a medium heat that comes from freshly ground black pepper, Szechuan peppercorns and ginger. Try it on our California Roll Sushi Bowl - recipe coming soon to our blog.
